The program EMA3D® is a three-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) solver developed by Electro Magnetic Applications Inc (EMA). The implementation of a time domain technique provides broad-band results often required to accurately characterize complex structures .EMA has a vast resume of experience with the finite difference technique. EMA has been utilizing this method for over forty years and consequently has developed and implemented numerous algorithms and enhancements, in addition to creating a variety of visualization techniques to aid in the interpretation and display of results.

EMA3D requires a text input file that contains all of the necessary information to define a particular problem. Such information includes: geometry, material parameters, electromagnetic sources, desired output, etc. The form of this input file is discussed in a subsequent section. Within EMA3D are algorithms for assessing the format of the input file to ascertain correct construction. Manual construction of the input file can be an extremely time consuming endeavor for complex geometries. In such cases, computer-aided generation of the input file is highly recommended. This is accomplished with the aid of EMA3D's GUI.

The EMA3D user guide is broken up into the following sections:

  1. Finite Difference Time Domain

  2. General Concepts

  3. Concepts, Features, and Terminology

  4. Input File Conventions

  5. Input File Listing and Explanation

  6. Executing EMA3D
