Cable Connector Impedance

Connectors were discussed in Section 5.5. Connectors always assume the same impedance matrix definitions as the inherent segment, unless specified otherwise. Connector impedance matrices possess the same interrelationships as those for the inherent segment.

The connector impedance matrices consist of the capacitance matrix, C, the inductance matrix, L, the conductance matrix, G, and the resistance matrix, R. The connector resistance matrix is independent of the capacitance, the inductance, and the conductance matrix values. However, the values within these other three matrices are interdependent. These matrix entries must meet certain criteria to maintain the assumptions required for transmission line formalism. Flow charts are provided in Figure 5.7.1 that portray the interdependency and relationship between these three matrices. This involves matrix specifications and the omission of such.

The connector capacitance matrix can be manually defined, or it will be automatically computed if another associated impedance matrix is provided. Using the first flow chart in Figure 5.71, if the connector capacitance matrix is manually defined, then the matrix entries are checked for physical acceptability. If the matrix passes this test, then the associated connector inductance matrix and connector conductance matrix are examined. If the inductance matrix is absent, then it is automatically computed using vacuum electromagnetic parameter values. If the inductance matrix is manually defined, then the matrix is checked for physical acceptability including multiplication with the manually defined capacitance matrix. If the inductance matrix is specified to be automatically computed, then it will be done using the specified speed of propagation. The flow charts within the Figure 5.7.1 can be used to assess the outcome of impedance matrix specifications, interdependencies, and omissions.
